Creating new Dobby weave designs

Designing Dobby designs in AVA

New dobby designs are created directly on screen. They cannot be created from scanned artwork. The steps involved in creating a new dobby design vary slightly depending on which AVA weave module you have.

Creating a new design using Dobby stand alone

  1. Go to File Menu > New. A sheet will open.
  2. Enter the design dimensions and the fabric sett (quality) in the chosen units. Xres refers to Ends/inch, Yres refers to Picks/inch.

A design window will be created showing plain weave throughout, with warp and weft colour bars to the bottom and right of the window. Also, a weave layer will automatically have been added to the file and a standard colour palette will open with it.

Note: The weave layer is locked by default, to prevent any unwanted editing being applied.  This can be unlocked by going to Layer > Unlock Contents.

Tip: Spend a little time customising the design windows Tool Bar to help save time in the future. Add the Show Warp & Weft, New Weave Layer, Threading, Pegplan, Weft Colour, Warp Colour and Weave Simulation buttons to the Tool Bar to make the process of creating new weaves much quicker. Once you have added these buttons you only need to click once on them to access each item from then on.

Selecting the number of Shafts used

When you create a new weave design it automatically selects 8 shafts. This can be changed at any time and will influence the design accordingly.

Select Shafts from the Weave Menu, and enter the number required.  If you have the Pegplan Window open as you do this, you will notice it instantly updates with the changes.

Delete

Note: If the selected number of shafts is increased while you are working on the weave structure, the threading will remain as it was (i.e. not using the additional shafts) until you change it. The pegplan will show plain weave in the extra shafts until you update it.
