Creating checks and stripes

Creating new Dobby Weave designs

Although it is possible to create designs with different colour orders for the warp and weft, it is also very simple to create even checks/plaids with the same colour order in the warp and weft.

  1. To do this, create a new document with the desired number of pixels in the width and height and your chosen resolution.  Set the Mode to None, and when the document is created, select New Weave Layer from the Weave Menu.
  2. Again, from the Weave Menu, select Show Warp and Weft.
  3. From the Window Menu, navigate to the Weave sub menu and select Warp Colour.  A window similar to that below will open:

  4. From the Window Menu, navigate to the Weave sub menu and open the Colour Palette.  This palette should be coloured from left to right, filling the top row of colours first.  These colours become colour a, b, c… in the Warp Colour window respectively.
  5. Map your desired colour arrangement into the Warp Colour window.  Updates in the Design Window are made in real-time, so designing is quick and easy.  Once you have created a colour sequence you are happy with within the first few picks of the design, these can be selected and repeated throughout the whole plan by holding down ^ (control key) on the keyboard and clicking within the selected area and selecting Repeat.

  6. When you are happy with the colour sequence throughout the design, click the ‘Transfer to other plan’ tool in the Tools Palette.

The colour sequence from the Warp Colour will be transferred to the Weft Colour plan, creating a checked pattern.

Note: You can continue to develop this pattern by simply clicking on a new colour in the Colour Palette, and drawing freehand into the warp and weft plans at the bottom, and to the right of the Design Window.

This process can also be done in reverse, by entering the Weft Colour sequence first, then clicking on the Transfer button in the Tools Palette.
