Setting a default layer transparency

The default layer transparency in AVA is set to 50%. This means the layers will have a certain opacity to them, and the look of your design will change if you change the layer order.

Changing the default layer transparency can help bring your digital prints closer to your production prints, but you need to know the transparency of the inks or dyes used in production.  This can often be a simply conversation with someone working in production.

If there is no opacity to the inks or dyes, or you set the default transparency to 100%.  This will make all new layers created in AVA completely transparent, and changing the layer order within the design will not affect how the design looks.

If you are provided with a transparency value to use, you can set it in the Overprint Settings , and your new layers in AVA will adopt this transparency.  To do this;

  1. Go the File Menu and select Settings .
  2. In the Settings window which opens, click on the Navigator button in the top to reveal all available Settings .

  3. Click on the Overprinting button:

  4. In the settings which open, enter a new transparency value as shown below;

Delete

Note: It is common for people to talk about opacity as opposed to transparency. If you are told the production inks are 20% opaque, then you need to enter 80% as the default transparency. If you require any assistance with this, please contact AVA Technical Support.
