Lock the position of colourways in the Layout Window

Prevent colourways and objects such as text and colour palettes from being moved

When you are trying to create a complex layout, sometimes colourways and objects such as text, logos and colour palettes can get moved when you did not want them to be. This is when the ability to lock their position becomes extremely useful, and it is so easy to do.

Locking the position of a colourway or an object

  1. Activate a colourway, another object or a group of objects in the Layout Window.
  2. Go to Colourway Menu > Lock. The selected objects will now be locked to their current positions on the page and their nodes will be displayed in red to differentiate them from other unlocked objects.

Locked colourways can be double clicked to access the Design Window for editing, but no editing or colouring can be done in the Layout Window. Colours can however be dragged out of the palette from locked colourways to use elsewhere.

Locked items which have been saved within a template will remain locked, even if the template is used again and again on different files.

Locking objects can also be done via the Layout Inspector.  Open it by clicking on the Inspector button in the toolbar, or from the Colourway Menu > Inspector.

  3. Click on the ruler icon along the top of the window.
  4. Activate the colourway or object you want to lock, and tick Locked:

The nodes around the locked object will become red, and you will no longer be able to move it, until you unlock it:

Unlocking the position of a colourway or an object

  1. Activate one or more locked objects.
  2. Go to Colourway Menu > Unlock. The selected objects will become unlocked and their nodes will return to the current node colour, indicating that they can now be edited as normal.

If you are using the Layout Inspector to lock the position of objects, then you can simply click on the locked object(s) and untick the Locked option.
