How to configure your windows on the screen

Restore your floating window position on screen

Palettes can be used to restore your floating window position on your screen. So, your Layers Palette, Info Window, Tools Palette and Navigation Windows to name a few can be re-arranged at the click of a button.

This is particularly useful when you have your windows and palettes in different places on the screen depending on the type of work you are doing. When you share these settings with colleagues who use different sized monitors to you, some fine control over the positioning of these may be required.

Customising the position of your floating windows

  1. Open and arrange your windows and floating windows such as the Layers Palette, Navigation Window and Status Window on your screen as you would like them.
  2. Create a new Palette by going to File Menu > New > Palette. We recommend you save this Palette and name it ‘WorkingAreas’ or WindowPositions’ - something which identifies the functions within the Palette.
  3. Go to AVA Menu > Settings > Monitor and drag the settings handler from the window to your new Palette.

Refer to the Palettes: What are they and how do I use them? article to learn how to customise the button with your own title and thumbnail.

  4. Repeat this process for each window layout configuration you want to store.

From now on, simply press the button in the palette to restore your floating windows to a saved position depending on the working environment you want.

Sharing working areas

You can share any Palette using AVA Productivity Manager. However, if your screen sizes are different, you should consider pinning your windows to their positions. If you do not do this, the restored positions may be undesirable on different sized monitors.

  1. Activate the window you wish to pin.
  2. Go to the Window menu and select Configure Window Settings.
  3. Configure the settings accordingly.

  • Neither - will leave your window status as it is.  For example, if your Layers Palette is closed at the time of pressing the button, it will remain closed when the button is pressed.
  • Make visible - will make the palette visible if it is invisible prior to pressing the button
  • Make invisible - will make the palette invisible if it is visible prior to pressing the button
  • Save size - will restore the palette to the size it was when the button was created
  • Save position - will restore the position of the window or palette on a new screen using the Relative or Absolute settings

Relative mode

Keeps the placement of the windows and palettes proportional to your screen.

Absolute mode

Restores the window positions to their absolute state. So, if your Layers Palette was 50 pixels from the top and from the left of your screen when its position was recorded, this position will be carried over to the new screen, regardless of its size.

The pins

The pins help you to place a palette to a specific area of your screen.

If you select only the top pin, when a window position is restored using a palette on a new screen, the window will move to the pinned location relative to the top of the new screen.

If you select both top and left pins, this will position a window or palette in the same relative position from the top and left of your monitor.
