Saving a design in repeat

Save several repeats of one design as a single repeat file

You can save several repeats of one design as a single repeat file. This means several repeats that have been set up using the Repeat Window can be cropped to one document, so the new single repeat includes the other repeats.

Often this technique is used prior to production where a single repeat file with a drop in it is saved as a file with a straight repeat. Saving a design in this way prevents problems later when the file is output to software which, unlike AVA, cannot handle drops at the repeat join.

  1. Open the design to be saved in repeat.
  2. Go to View Menu > Repeat.
  3. Set the drop amount or leave it on zero if no drop is required.
  4. Enter the number of repeats required and click OK. You will see the design change to the selected number of repeats and the correct drop amount.
  5. Go to Edit Menu > Select All.
  6. Select the Crop Tool, hold down ^ (control key) and click in the design to bring up the Crop Tool contextual menu.
  7. Choose Set from Selection from the contextual menu. A crop box will be drawn around the repeated file in exactly the same place as the selection.

You can also use Extend Design Document

This feature is a great tool for extending the size of your document. It lets you position the original design content in the centre, at the top, at the bottom, or on the left or right side of the new canvas and is great if you need to apply borders to your design.

You can access this feature from the Edit Menu > Extend Design Document.

Extend Canvas By - this option lets you grow your canvas by automatically adding blank borders around it at a specified size.

Total Size - use this option to specify the overall size of your canvas. When you use this option, the software automatically works out how large the borders need to be in order to satisfy the new document dimensions.

Apply to - choose to apply the new dimensions to the first repeat of your file, or the current repeat. The current repeat is the number of repeats you are currently viewing your design in.

Design Position - click on the blue arrows to specify where the original design content sits within the new document size.

Delete

Tip: When the borders are added to the document, they are adding in the background colour set the Tools Palette. If you want your new borders to adopt a colour from the original artwork, set this colour as the background colour by using the Pipette Tool to ⌥ (option key) click on that colour. That colour will appear in the Tools Palette, and your new borders will be applied in that colour.
